Caster – News Corp News Bolt 2018 Internal Accelerator
By Tamsin Rose, Cadet Journalist at Herald Sun
Caster
A new approach to local news production.
Why did you apply to the program?
I applied to News Bolt because I thought it would be an interesting experience and a chance to learn more about the business. It seemed like a unique opportunity to meet people in the company, as well as inspiring entrepreneurs working in the Startup space. I did not expect quite how intense the process would be.
How did you managed being part of an internal accelerator?
Managing my time and energy between my job as a journalist and my time in the News Corp News Bolt Internal Accelerator program was tricky. This was the biggest challenge for the project for myself and the rest of the Caster team. It quickly became apparent we needed clear roles and tasks to make sure we got everything done. Putting in long days was a must.
What’s the biggest learning you’ll take away from the Slingshot program to take back into News Corp?
The program taught me new ways to think and test ideas quickly. It also gave me confidence and skills in presenting to a large group of people and helped me develop concise communication skills.
What was your favourite aspect of the program?
I enjoyed how far the program put me out of my comfort zone. I also really enjoyed learning about starting a business and getting an idea off the ground.
What’s next for your Startup?
We are looking forward to developing the business with News Corp and continuing to test its viability. I really hope the idea gets the chance to continue because I think we ended up with something very strong.
